Fatherhood Reflections XIII - The Agony Of Defeat

Today we let the boy experience what it feels like to lose.

He thought it would be fun to bet on a game of scissors paper stone with the winner gaining control of the TV (mummy vs son). Surely he thought he would end up watching the TV whether win or lose. So we emphasized to him that if he lost, he would NOT be watching his cartoons. Still he had that "Imma gonna win smirk".

Instead he came up with scissors vs the wifey's stone.

Suddenly he just burst to the ground and laid there crying! He cried and cried the hardest cry he could muster.

We watched and while our hearts softened, allowed that agony of defeat to sink in, with no recourse.

And this will turn into a big chapter in his life where he learns to feel the agony of defeat. Just like in the movie Inside Out, it has turned into a special memory filled with sadness and anger for him.

He will learn and be stronger for this.

So proud of my boy ;)

JH Kim Taekwondo Singapore

I must say that the boy's punching and kicking techniques have improved tremendously.

JH Kim Taekwondo is definitely not the cheapest (it's a lot cheaper doing it in the Community Centers), but here the kids train in an aircon environment (not sure if that's appropriate though haha) and more importantly, the student to teacher ratio is far smaller. Presently both my kids are in 3:1 student to teacher classes. Of course it helps that we come at a less popular class timing.

Also there is class rescheduling flexibility of we had to miss classes. Classes are signed up and paid on a quarterly (term) basis. I guess end of day it will depend on whether the kids still want to carry on learning Taekwondo, but I think this minimum three month martial art class is definitely with the money.

Here's the most recent pricing guide:

Manchester United 3 Sunderland 0

Top of the table for the first time since dunno when!

1) Anthony Martial The Real Deal
This guy is making waves for his scoring, and yet the game he does not score, he shows he has arrived. With one assist and several smart plays, I can only hope he doesn't get injured so soon.

2) Rooney Is Still Terrible
No drive, poor passing in the final third and poor leadership skills. Firstly I don't know what's wrong with him. Secondly and more importantly, why does LVG persist with him. He can't call him a good leader when he doesn't show it on the field! Bastian Schweinsteigger is a leader when he comes on the field, not Rooney.

3) Why Depay Over Young?
Also I don't understand why Young is overlooked for Depay. Young is more defensive and dependable, while Depay is wasteful but explosive. Yet the feeling is that the novelty is over for Depay.

4) Smalling And Blind Is Perfect
Don't change this CB pairing. All detractors please go eat your words.

5) Tony V Rolls Back The Years
Was nice to see Valencia get game time. It was even nicer to see him bombing up and down the right side with aplomb like he used to before his leg break. Hopefully the injury to Luke Shaw will spur him to life.

Hopefully we keep this up and win the league!

Saturday Football Fun

At my young age, I've got this feeling my days of impact sport is coming to an end sooner rather than later ;'( rather sad when I think about it.

Still it's been a good run. Of being a good player, scoring good goals, and everyone wanting you in their team.

The gang of us first started playing in VJC, then followed by TJC, then ITE East, then Temasek Polytechnic and finally Kovan Futsal Court.

In fact, we actually started out playing basketball first, and then only switched to football a few years later.

Recently we even snapped a picture together as one of us was relocating to Dubai. Funnily enough it was our first picture on the pitch together.

Hopefully I can go at it till my early 40s at least.

Inside Out

The movie was an eye-opener man. Connecting us viewers to our emotions and towards self discovery, it was awesome.

Not so for the kids maybe :)

F1 Singapore GP 2015 - Paddock Club

For the first time ever, I attended the F1 event at the Paddock Club. Probably the most exclusive tier of F1 viewing available. It was basically free everything, from the food at the restaurants at the Play Area, to the Lotus Team Suite, and the most premium alcohol all over the place. Viewing was right above the individual team garages too.

Included in all this exclusivity was the pit lane walk where you got up close to the pits, the mechanics and the constructor teams. As a sponsor of the Lotus Team, we also got to watch a special session of the Lotus Team in action during the practice sessions. Very exclusive alright!

Let's just say that it was not easy to leave the place sober. And boy did our clients enjoy the experience.

Truly a journey into exclusivity!

Manchester United 3 Liverpool 1

As LVG predicted, we won this game with abit of surprising ease.

DDG Is Back
With a new 4-year contract signed, this has been the been the best outcome since his RM saga began. Abit dodgy early on maybe due to rustiness but he made two terrific saves to show he's back. So happy to see him back.

Blind And Smalling Make A Great Defensive Duo
Say what you want about Blind but he sure has proved a lot of doubters wrong. His positional play was exceptional and largely kept Benteke in check all game. The duo have only conceded four goals in the last seven games. Blind even managed to pop up with a goal.

Shaw And Darmian Are The Future
Both have been revelations this season. A picture on consistency and work ethic. Both are proving to be astute buys. Shaw has done a great job working his way back to fitness after last season's failure to shine.

Midfield Engine
Schweinsteigger is definitely not the player he was ten years ago, but he shows that experience can take him a very long way. Carrick is still good as gold while Schneiderlin is the future. Together, a combination of 2/3 at any one time basically bossed a Liverpool team playing five in midfield.

Who Is Anthony Martial?
The real deal, that's who! Just when Benteke scored that unstoppable goal and brought tension back into our house, Martial picks up the ball from Young in the left of the final third, dribbled past two defenders and calmly slots home to make it 3-1. What a way to announce your arrival.

Post GE 2015: Reflections

Obviously the vocal minority is not happy and we're seeing it all over social media. But it is what it is, the electorate has spoken.

Till GE2020!

Gardens By The Bay East

I remember a time when we used to take adventure walks here after secondary school. It was nothing by reclaimed land and open grass patches. There was a helicopter pad at the end of the East Coast Park, facing Marina South.

Then Marina Barrage came up over at Marina South, and the Gardens By The Bay East took over the area with the helipad. And linking both was the dam keeping water from the Marina reservoir from flowing out to the open sea.

How much things have changed.
