For the first time, we sprang a surprise for her by buying a cake and going over late in the evening to celebrate it for her. She's always preferred a low key affair where here birthday is concerned, so I wasn't really sure how she'd react to it.
The kids were far more enthusiastic than me and the wifey combined. Each wanted to design their own birthday card for their grandma (the boy in fact made two!), they wanted to play the surprise and what to say when they jump out from behind the wall to surprise her etc. The boy was so excited that he was planning and strategizing with the rest of us what we should say and where each of us should hide when we got to the door.
We bought her her favourite Cedele cheesecake, sang her a birthday song and took the usual family photos.
In the end I think she was happy.
