Money Well Wasted And Recovered

So I was on the flight to Danang and we had one of the worst flight experiences ever! Even worse on the way back!

Anyway I ended up being so bored that I decided to splash the cash for earphones so I could listen to whatever's on my iPhone. Crazy expensive!

Anyhoo, I purchase the earphones and immediately use them, only to find one side not working properly! So I fed this back to the stewardess on the JetStar flight. And they couldn't replace because it was the last piece, so they refunded my payment!

Nice touch!

My First Golf Trophy

I don't think I'm very good at golf even after 11 years of playing.

As many have noticed, I've been using the same set of irons for all these years. The core set that I first bought for $199 plus free golf bag and putter. Some clubs have changed, but the core has remained.

That said, there I was on the Danang Montgomerie Golf Course hole #8 blue tee facing a 115m shot Par 3 hole, having played a lousy round thus far. I choose a 7 iron because I'm not confident with my 9 iron, even though the 7 gets me to about 120m on a good swing, so I risked overshooting the green.

I tee up my Noodle ball with a short tee, and try not to think about my lousy first 10+ holes (we started from hole #13 for this tournament). My swing comes down a little fast and there is a slight topping and the shot is not a clean one. Somehow the ball shoots out straight horizontally across the water with hardly any lob, hits the steep gradient of the green fringe, and bounces slowly towards the hole. It stops about half a meter from the hole.

Immediately, the whole flights knows I'll win this nearest-to-pin.

I buy a round of beers celebrating my expected win.

During the gala dinner at night, I am expectedly announced as NTP winner for the hole.

The most uncanny part is that back in 2015, I played in the exact same competition, on the exact same course, and won the NTP on the exact same hole! At that time when I was announced the winner, my name was cruelly mangled so badly by the Vietnamese MC, that we all thought that it wasn't me who won. Then a month on, the organizer emailed to tell me that it was me who won and the trophy would be shipped to me. Two years later, I've accepted that it got lost in the mail.

This might just be my proudest golf moment yet.

Happy Birthday Mummy!

Today is my mother's birthday.

For the first time, we sprang a surprise for her by buying a cake and going over late in the evening to celebrate it for her. She's always preferred a low key affair where here birthday is concerned, so I wasn't really sure how she'd react to it.

The kids were far more enthusiastic than me and the wifey combined. Each wanted to design their own birthday card for their grandma (the boy in fact made two!), they wanted to play the surprise and what to say when they jump out from behind the wall to surprise her etc. The boy was so excited that he was planning and strategizing with the rest of us what we should say and where each of us should hide when we got to the door.

We bought her her favourite Cedele cheesecake, sang her a birthday song and took the usual family photos.

In the end I think she was happy.

Wishing her everlasting good health, wealth and happiness!

I love you ma!

Fatherhood Reflections XLII - Liar Liar Pants On Fire

Today the boy was caught lying.

We had spent time in the car wondering how he had spent the entire week's allowance of $10 by Wednesday. In doing so, we broke down the food he bought each day and made he recall everything he bought. Still we couldn't reconcile about $2+, which at this level, is quite important because $2 can buy you a sumptuous recess meal with excess to save up.

The boy was straight faced that nothing was bought from the bookshop, so we were early wondering if he had bought more food without remembering, did someone steal his money, did he accidentally drop it, did he forget to take his change etc.

Then at night while the wifey was packing his bag for the next day, she uncovered this new spangled pencil sharpener thingy shaped like an hourglass with fancy erasers at the other end. Very fancy indeed, and it was something she hadn't seen before the previous day.

Immediately the boy gives the ultimate guilty face. The wifey's interrogation began. It took a lot out of the wifey to express her disappointment and anger at being lied to. I could tell she was very disappointed, as was I, at such a revelation from our cute young innocent boy. Not so innocent anymore I guess.

The boy took all the scoldings without looking too guilty. Wonder what was going through his head at being found out? Obviously it wasn't one of guilt. So daddy comes in for the sledgehammer punishment. Told him to stand at the main door entrance facing the entrance to reflect on what he did wrong. He was to stand there until I was happy.

I took a shower and did everything normally while he was standing there a good 10-15mins. Then when I was satisfied I went over to talk to him again, but still I wasn't convinced he understood how serious this incident was. So I told him he was going to sleep at the doorway tonight to help him understand how serious this was to us.

Now he starts panicking. Keeps saying he doesn't want to sleep there yada yada. I ignore his pleas and told him to keep standing there. To add more seriousness to driving my point through, I took his bolster and threw it at the doorway. This was when he couldn't contain it longer and began bawling and crying his eyes. To add to the drama I switched off the living room lights as if we were all going to bed.

In the end I let him cry a good 10mins before finally coming out and talking to him again. This time everything came out naturally. He had gone with 5 other friends to the bookshop and all of them decided to buy that fancy sharpener together. In the end I kept emphasizing that telling the truth even after having done wrong is always the most important, especially to family.

Couldn't help thinking about my own antics when I was that age, lying to my mom about similar things and getting caught. There were guilty pangs when disciplining him, but yet it was a necessary process he had to learn from before he makes lying a habit and thinking he can get away with it easily.

Next whole week, he is on an allowance of $1 a day.

Sigh.

A day in the life.

Europa League Champions!

What a game!

Tactically this was classic Mourinho. Fellaini had a MOTM performance for me. Everyone played so outstandingly disciplined and well.

So happy we won.

Europa League Winner
English League Cup Winner
Community Shield Winner
Qualified for UEFA Champions League next year
Super Cup showdown with either Real Madrid or Juventus
6th place in the Premier League

What a fantastic 2016/17 season it's been!

We have so many injured players!

Manchester United 2 Crystal Palace 0

Wow.

Whoever said Mourinho never plays with kids surely didn't expect this.

A total of eight kids from our academy turned up for the game.

Josh Harrop scored an amazing goal.

Axel Tuanzebe bossed the midfield.

Demitri Mitchell looked exceptional on the left flank.

Scott Mctominay looked good locking the holding midfield role.

Joel Pereira is the next big keeper of his generation, kept a clean sheet.

Angel Gomes came on for only a few minutes but became the first player in the EPL born in the 21st century. He's only 16.

Pogba had one assist and one goal.

Lingard had one amazing solo run for an assist.

These could be Mourinho's own generation of Man United homegrown boys. The Busby Babes, Fergie's Fledglings, and now Jose's Juniors / Mourinho's Man-boys (someone better come up with something better!)

Who said you can't win with kids?

Bring on Ajax! Let's thrash them! Take me Holm!

Am I Worrying Too Much?

I'm worrying a lot lately.

Maybe far more than necessary.

I worry for my kids' futures.

I worry for my own future.

I worry for Singapore's future.

I worry for the world's future.

What type of world will my kids find themselves in in 20 years time?

How long more will I survive in this company?

How long more can this company's business model survive?

How will my poor health slow me down?

How is Singapore going to remain prosperous for the next 50 years?

What is becoming of the world?

I have no answers, only worries.

Sad.

Manchester United -> Europa League Final!

We are in to the Europa League Final after overcoming Celta Vigo over two legs!

I really hope we win this cup. It has been a long season but I think Mourinho is the right man to lead us to more trophies.

Had to watch the painful loses over the next two league games (Arsenal 2-0, Tottenham Hotspurs 2-1) where we played a team of second stringers, and the team played half-heartedly with hardly anything to play for. Liverpool is battling Arsenal for the fourth UCL spot.

Nonetheless, what matters is the Europa League Final on May 24th against Ajax Amsterdam!

Win it and we win this trophy for the first time in club history, we get an automatic UCL Group stage spot, we get to play in the UEFA Super Cup and we end the season with not one, not two, but three trophies!
